WWII / Third Reich - Private Full-Day Tour

Private tour

Duration

8 hours

Follow the traces of World War II, Adolf Hitler and the Allied Forces

A full day tour in Salzburg City and Bavaria following the traces of WWII and its impacts such as bombing raids and the occupation by the Allies. Explore the locations, stories and significance of a war defining generations and making Europe an arena for one of the most abhorrent disasters in history.

In March 1938 German troops moved into the city. Political opponents, Jewish citizens and other minorities were arrested and deported to concentration camps. In the city itself several POW camps as well as so-called transit camps were organized and held for slave labor.

As of October 1944, fifteen airstrikes by allied bombing killed 547 inhabitants, destroying or damaging 46 % of the buildings, among them the cathedral. Inspite of these massive attacks much of the city’s Baroque architecture remained intact. In May 1945, American troops entered the city making Salzburg the headquarters of American occupied zones. During this 10 years’ time period Camp Roeder, then biggest American military base in Europe, as well as several displaced persons camps – among them Riedenburg, Camp Mülln, Bet Bialik, Bet Trumpeldor, and New Palestine were established.

Just a 30 minutes’ drive from Salzburg into the heart of the Bavarian Mountain – the Obersalzberg and its vicinity became not only Hitler’s retreat but also the second most important headquarter of the Third Reich.

Adolf Hitler spent about one third of his time at the Berghof surrounded by serval close-by residencies of top Nazi leaders such as Hermann Göring, Martin Bormann and Albert Speer. Its summit towering the Obersalzberg: The Eagle’s Nest – an architectural masterpiece and memorial sign for the insanity of this regime.
